About Barbara Chan

Barbara Chan

Barbara Chan’s portfolio career experiences give depth and range to the expertise she brings to her role as executive coach and organizational consultant. She studied marine biology, ecology, and psychology in college, during which time she counseled runaway youth and their families and Hispanic students getting ready to enter college. Her ten years at University of California at Berkeley, where she advised and coached thousands of senior scholars from 81 countries, helped her develop a keen understanding of human and functional diversity.

In her role as editor of a technology magazine, Barbara broadened her understanding of computer technologies. When she left this position, Apple Computer sought her out to bring her international and technological expertise to support its business launches in Latin America and the Far East. Executives at companies like Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Blue Shield asked her to introduce new technologies and ways of working. She loved the challenge and continual learning involved with helping people develop their highest potential while transforming the way they work.

Since her first independent consulting engagements back in 1986, Barbara has developed and grown her expertise and trusted reputation by helping hundreds of executives and their teams increase their effectiveness and personal satisfaction. She earned several credentials, including the Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) certification from the highly respected Institute for Management Consultants USA, whose Code of Ethics she adheres to strongly; coaching credentials from the Coaches Training Institute and TopHuman (China); facilitation from The Grove International and Community at Work; and mediation from the American Arbitration Association. She also became certified in Sustainable Business Management and Green Building practices to support executives concerned about the impact of business practices on the environment and society.

Barbara serves as Adjunct Faculty at Advantara® Institute Coach Education and Development, co-hosts the International Coach Federation Global Executive Coaches SIG, hosts the Institute of Management Consultants NorCal East Bay Consultants Forum, and is a founding member of the Green Chamber of Commerce. She currently sits on the board of directors at Berrett-Koehler Publishers and the advisory board for the Berkeley High School for Social Justice and Ecology. Over the years she has spoken about Embracing Change, Juggling Life, Family and Work, The Leadership Challenge and Change Your Thinking, Change Your Results. In 2007 she was an invited speaker about Leadership and Social Responsibility at the Beijing International Coaching Conference for Corporate Social Responsibility.

Today, Barbara is honored to serve a broad range of clients who consider her a trusted advisor and thought partner as they address their dilemmas, enhance their leadership, build the effectiveness of their organizations, and define their legacy.
